Chapter 10

Fótr was right and by dawn, the sea was just a little fresh. We had sea room and the oars were put on the mastfish, the sail billowed, and we had a wind from the north-west to take us to our home. We had suffered some damage and that first day was spent repairing. Ragnar helped and Aethelflaed and Ylva left their fortress at the prow and went to prepare food. I saw Fótr beaming and I joined him.

“The Allfather does nothing without a purpose, Lord Sámr. I see a different family this morning. They are not yet healed but the wounds are not as raw as they were.” He nodded towards Erik who was helping Aethelflaed and Ylva. “Erik is smitten you know.”

“What?”

“Ylva, he is in love with Ylva.”

“How do you know?”

He laughed and I saw that he missed nothing, “I have eyes and I can see. Bear Tooth and Ebbe saw it too, however, Erik himself told me one night, on watch. He asked me if someone like him could ever hope to marry a lady like Ylva.”

“I did not know.”

“You are her father and he is in awe of you.” He smiled, “You need do nothing, Lord Sámr. The Norns have spun, and their threads are now bound. Each day they will become closer as she comes from the place she is hiding. I saw it with my brother and the Skraeling. We have seven days before we see my stad and by then I believe that there will be a change; in Ylva at least.”

“And galdramenn, reader of weather and people, what do you see for Ragnar?”

His face became sad, “His journey will be harder, and I confess that I know not. I would use Bear Tooth to get close to him. The Skraeling of his tribe, the Mi’kmaq, understood wounds to warriors. He will know a way.”

As I looked astern, I felt a pang of guilt. Erik had said that there were other captives but we had seen none. What had happened to them? I had to get my family home first and then, when King Harald was no longer a threat I could consider seeking them.

On the way south we stopped at uninhabited islands again but not the same ones as when we had headed north. We were taking no risks. All the time Fótr was adding to his map. As we headed towards the channel between the Land of the Wolf and Hibernia I stood by Erik as he adjusted the sail. I had been thinking about all of my warriors on the way home and wondering about their future. Many of the younger ones would have rid themselves of the need to go a-Viking and would find a wife to start a family. There were others, like Ráðulfr Ráðgeirsson, Ulf Olafsson, Gandálfr Eriksson and Ǫlmóðr the Quiet who had asked if they could be my oathsworn. I had agreed. The only one I needed to speak with was Erik.

“Erik, what are
